In the 1840s, Sir John Franklin led HMS Erebus and HMS Terror through Arctic waters in search of the Northwest Passage, a shipping route between Europe and Asia. When Franklin’s ships became trapped in ice, the surviving sailors died in desperate conditions. In 2014, Parks Canada and its partners located the well-preserved wreck of Erebus, a discovery that will help unlock the secrets of the Franklin Expedition.

This colourful stamp combines a sonar image of Erebus beneath the water with a line drawing of the ship's main deck. Both images are overlaid on a map of Canada’s Arctic. The booklet features a background image showing the discovery of Erebus’ bell, which was recovered from the wreck by divers from Parks Canada’s underwater archeology team.
