Historical note: during world war ii, after the german invasion of poland prompted great britain and france to declare war on germany, some of the polish army and others survived to go into exile. They formed the polish government-in-exile as well as the polish armed forces in exile but soon decamped after the fall of france in june 1940, at which point they ended up in great britain.

The i corps, part of the polish armed forces in the west subordinate to the allied scottish command with a headquarters in perthshire, fought alongside the allies during the war, although not as a single unit until after the german surrender in 1945. It was disbanded in 1947.
