CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA: Unusual stamps with an unusual postmark; 5c DAVIS, LOCAL PRINT, (Scott #7), pair, close irregular margins, R stamp has 2 1/2 MGNS, L stamp in, still an AMAZING pair w an odd color Walterborough SC postmark, Dec 29 (PROBABLY 1862), my old DIETZ lists this as Red-Brown (as WATERBOROUGH), but I know such a color is often due to fading, still it catalogs an additional $75 for Red and there is definitely something peculiar about the shade, WALTERBOROUGH IS well known for producing a POSTMASTER PROVISIONAL in 1864 and this device MAY VERY WELL HAVE BEEN USED AS THE CONTROL CANCEL FOR THAT ISSUE, in addition the L stamp is overinked giving Davis an evil clown-like appearance, BOTH STAMPS HAVE FILLED-IN FRAMES but the R STAMP DOES NOT SHOW THE FREAKISH PRINT, ms on reverse identifying the town (though it was not NECESSARY), GENUINE, FINE.
