Item Description
The people of Greenland - where most of the population is descended from long lines of hunters and fishermen - depend on the sea for a huge part of their diet. CRABS are a large part of the ocean's bounty on which Greenlanders thrive.Greenland chose to celebrate these undersea crustaceans in 1993 and depicted 3 different species, with postal values ranging from 4 DKK to 8.50 DKK.
Here is a block of four of the middle value, 7.25 DKK ($1.08) for mail to Europe, showing Greenland's very prevalent - but very crabby - SNOW CRAB. Though delicious, this crab is known for its cantankerous disposition, as shown in this one-of-a-kind Hand-Drawn and Hand-Colored cachet where a SNOW CRAB is grousing about the weather in Greenland.
The cachet was drawn and colored on a custom Artopages envelope designed for Greenlandic FDCs. The block of four stamps is cancelled with the pictorial First Day of Issue postmark showing some type of Greenland shrimp crab (!) on March 25, 1993.
This uniquity just recently came to light as I was standing near my Greenland albums, and heard faint, unintelligible grumbling! The winning bidder may have to muffle this crab to preserve the peace and quiet in your collection!
