Item Description

Iceland Post for many years issued two stamps per year celebrating their native birdlife. All were beautifully illustrated by Iceland's master stamp designer Throstur Magnusson.

Here are the 1996 entrants in that avian progression - the Cormorant and the Barrow's Goldeneye. Part of the proceeds from these stamps' sales went to Conservation efforts in Iceland's wetlands.

This handcolored Puffin Cachet shows the two birds on a putty colored handmade envelope bearing two nice strikes of the official First Day pictorial cancel used in Reykjavik on February 7, 1996. The cancel shows a cormorant in silhouette in the customary 'spread wings' pose.

The reverse shows this is marked as an 'Aritist Proof', created before the other cachets were colored. Inly 10 covers with the cachet were sent to Iceland for servicing.
