Item Description

Full set of stamps marking the 75th anniversary of Cocos barrel mail and showing: staff unpacking barrel; jukongs waiting for mail ship; and P&O mail ship “Morea”.

Cocos barrel mail began in 1909, when Captain W.L. Brown of the P&O liner RMS Morea, dropped a barrel of food, books and mail while passing close to the islands. It soon became a regular practice with other liners that continued until 1954. The liners notified the cable station staff that a barrel was going to be dropped and jukongs were sent to retrieve the mail. Barrel mail was incoming mail because it arrived in a wooden barrel. Outgoing mail was sealed in a tin and tied to a line put out by the ship dropping the barrel. Thus, outgoing mail was termed tin can mail.
