Studio publicity photo of actress Gail Russell. Russell was 'discovered' for her exceptional beauty when only 18 and signed to a contract with Paramount Studios in 1943. At the time, she had intended on becoming a commercial artist and was exceptionally camera-shy. To help her relax, well-meaning associates began providing her with vodka, and in no time she became an alcoholic. Although Russell continued to perform, her star potential was lost, and she gained a reputation for being undependable. Shortly after she was top-billed in a low-budget tear-jerker, happy-ending dog film in 1962 , she was found dead on the floor of her apartment with an empty vodka bottle nearby. At the time, Russell was only 36 years old.
