Approximately 4" x 2.5".Academic Reward of Merit from Pottsville, {Pennsylvania], dated March 1843. Its text reads "This is to certify that S. Hessuer by diligent attention to study, has gained the head of her Class, and the approbation of her instructor. E. E. P."
Rewards of merit were small paper tokens of congratulation given to students for good behavior and scholastic accomplishment. They have been used by teachers for generations but were most popular during the nineteenth century
