Chief Wahoo may have slightly misunderstood the meaning of 'Home Opener' when he used a can opener on someone's residence . . . but fans of the REAL Cleveland Indians 1998 Home Opener were probably too excited to notice! It was the Tribe's first home game after the previous year's World Series games where they represented the American League against the Florida Marlins.This handcolored cover is franked with an Ohio Sesquicentennial single, as well as the 29¢ Olympic Baseball stamp of 1992, and both received the large pictorial cancel saluting the first Indians home game of '98. This cancel was applied at the main Cleveland processing facility, which you could hit with a baseball thrown from the top of Jacobs Field!
My mom worked as an usher at the stadium at this very game! The Indians beat the Anaheim Angels that day in 10 innings, 8 to 5!
