AVRO ARROW SILVER DART FIRST DAY COVER This envelope shows the Silver Dart, the first airplane to fly in Canada and was postmarked from Ottawa ON Canada It is postmarked February 23, 1959. The cover is a souvenir of the golden anniversary of controlled flight in Canada. The stamp celebrates the Silver Dart and the A V Roe CF-105 on the occasion of the fiftieth year of manned flight in Canada. By the time the stamp was released, Diefenbaker had cancelled the Arrow and the Post Office has never, from that day to this, admitted that the jet airplane is indeed the Arrow. There is a handwritten address on the FDC .The stamp itself shows that biplane and a jet which is obviously the C-105 at the time the most advanced airplane in the world. For example, it was the first plane to use computer technology in the controls. While this is very much a Silver Dart item, my main interest is the Avro Arrow stamp released on Feb, 23, 1959 just three days after the finest fighter plane in the world was abruptly cancelled. My dad worked for AVRO as a lead hand radar technician. Unlike most of the neighbourhood he survived the initial layoff of some 14,000 skilled workmen and engineers many of whom migrated to Texas and California where they joined US aircraft companies and became a mainstay in NASA and the nascent computer industries. My family got these stamps from a collector who bought them in 1959 as a souvenir of the betrayal of Canada's aerospace industry. Number 8 envelope.
