British Local Stamps Lundy Island 1954 Silver Jubilee MNH LU 106-111 Full SetCatalogue numbers are from early 1970s edition of "Catalogue of British Local Stamps"Please see scans as these form part of the description.Lundy Island is about 12 miles from Hartland Point and is in the British channel. About three miles long, over half a mile wide at one point and rising over 460 feet above sea level, some 200 men worked on the island in the 1860’s for the Lundy Granite Co. The company ceased to quarry in 1868 and at present the permanent population is 20, although as many as 25,000 tourists visit the island in the summer months. Its philatelic history goes back a long way. In 1925 Mr. Martin Harman bought the island for £16,000 and was soon in dispute with the G.P.O. over the postal allowance, as a result of which he decided to take over the postal service and from January 1st, 1928, the G P.O. ceased to operate from the island. Mr. Harman introduced private local stamps on November 1st, 1929, using a unit of currency called "puffin". An airmail service was started between Mr. R. T. Boyd from Barnstaple Aerodrome and Mr. Harman at Lundy. experimental flights took place in June 1934. The first airmail issues were in denominations of pence and shillings, being primarily sold at the aerodrome, but subsequently puffin denominations were issued. At first the service was known as Atlantic Coasts Services.
