Item Description
The USPS celebrated the 300th birthday of Earle American Renaissance Man BEN FRANKLIN in 2006, with a setenant set of 4 stamps showing his many facets. Here is a FDC franked with two of those designs - 'Benjamin Franklin, Statesman' and 'Benjamin Franklin, Scentist'.The cachet celebrates Franklin's rather tongue-in-cheek support of making the Wild Turkey the National Bird. It's doubtful he paraded through the streets of old Philadelphia with a tame turkey on his arm . . but this is what it would have looked like if he did!
This FDC is one of only a few that were combo-franked with the Wild Turkey stamp from the Northeast Deciduous Forest pane, the 7th on the series of the 'Nature of America' series.
It comes with an insert reprinting his arguments in favor of the Turkey as a National Symbol, from a 1784 letter to his daughter!
