1995 marked the 100th anniversary of the emergence of what is accepted as the first American newspaper 'comic' -- Richard Outcault's "The Yellow Kid" . . . and the USPS observed this centennial with a sheet of 20 stamps depicting some of the best-known comic strip characters from the first 50 years of newspaper comics.
This cover on a yellow envelope is franked with the stamps for BARNEY GOOGLE, the scheming hustler of Hootin' Holler, and LI'L ORPHAN ANNIE, the ever-optimistic heroine whose perseverance and pluckiness helped raise America's spirits during the Great Depression.
The cachet, depicting ALTERED versions of famous comics characters (to comply with copyright laws) like Pogo, Krazy Kat, Garfield, The Yellow Kid, and a Cow & Chicken from The Far Side, is handcolored and shows turn-of-the-century black and white characters interacting with their more modern counterparts.
Less than 50 of these FDCs were serviced and handcolored.
