Item Description
Here's a One-of-a-Kind First Day Cover celebrating the 50th Anniversary of U.S. Savings Bonds, as a Bald Eagle admires the bounty of bucks he has accumulated.Four years after the North American Wildlife sheet was issued (and for which Bennett Cachetoons created their first cachets), this U.S. Savings Bond stamp debuted, and the original Bald Eagle cachet from 1987 was repurposed and altered in concordance with the new stamp. Instead of the hand mirror the Eagle was originally holding, a wad of dollars was placed in his 'hand'.
The Eagle and his 'fortune' from Savings Bonds were handcolored, and the cover received the standard 4-bar First Day of Issue cancel from April 30,1991 In Washington DC.
This cover was recently unearthed in the artist's archives. There will never be another!
