Item Description

This cover commemorate the launch of the manned Apollo Flight 8 -AS 502 on 12/21/1968. The Apollo 8 mission was to travel to the moon, make 10 orbits and reconnaissance of the Mare Tranquillitatis that would be the Apollo 11 landing site. This was the world's first flight to the moon and back. The space capsule with the 3 Astronauts: James Lovell, Frank Borman and William Anders, splashed down in the Pacific Ocean where it was picked up by the USS Yorktown ( CVS-10) on 12/27/1968. This cover was cancelled on Christmas Eve 12/24/1968 at Deep Space Network Control Center in Pasadena, CA  by Astro Covers.
