Apollo 11 to the Moon This cover commemorates the first moon landing by Apollo 11. The 3 astronauts: Michael Collins, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin travelled to the moon; landed on the lunar surface on 07/20/1969 and returned to earth on 07/24/1969. Launching from Cape Canaveral on 07/16/1969 to the Moon - this epic 3 day flight with Command Module Michael Collins piloting. Arriving at the Moon on July 20, Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin flew the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle to the Moon's surface. On July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC, Armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon's surface. Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later, and they spent about two and a quarter hours together exploring the site they had named Tranquility Base upon landing. Armstrong and Aldrin collected 47.5 pounds (21.5 kg) of lunar material to bring back to Earth and were on the Moon's surface for 21 hours, 36 minutes before lifting off to rejoin Columbia. as pilot Michael Collins flew the Command Module Columbia in Lunar Orbit. The astronauts used Eagle's ascent stage to lift off from the lunar surface and rejoin Collins in the command module. They jettisoned Eagle before they performed the maneuvers that propelled Columbia out of the last of its 30 lunar orbits onto a trajectory back to Earth. They returned to Earth and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on July 24 after more than eight days in space. After the splashdown, the astronauts and the return capsule were retrieved from the Pacific Ocean by helicopters from the USS Hornet ( CVS-12 ) after more than 8 days in space. This cover was machine cancelled on the date of the Moon Landing (07/20/1969 ) at Montclair, NJ Hometown of Buzz Aldrin and has an original Space Craft Covers printed glassine sleeve plus includes the SCC insert.
