Item Description
The theme for Stamp Collecting Month in 1996 was "Collect and Protect" and that's what the Ries Chapter of the AFDCS was urging with this cover. 10 members of the club were present in San Diego for the lavish First Day Ceremony and serviced this cover on the spot, at the San Diego Wild Animal Park.That's the official emblem of the .Wild Animal Park on the reverse.
The cachet, on a gray envelope, depicts all 15 of the species seen on the stamps in the sheetlet, and the image is handcolored. The cover is franked with the Piping Plover stamp issued at the start of Stamp Collecting Month in 1996 - October 2.
And good news -- in the years since 1996 the Piping Plover has somewhat recovered and now is categorized as 'Nearly Threatened' in most of its range, rather than the more dire 'Endangered'!
