Item Description
AIRMAIL etiquette with a BOXING theme; promo label issued in France for the Cerdan vs Zale fight in Roosevelt Stadium, Jersey City NJ, USA, Sept 1948, in English and French, measures 2" x 2.5", Par Avion, etc, apparently cost 25c, full OG NH, very colorful, tiny inclusion or stain on face. VFMarcel Cerdan was a French fighter who became World Middleweight champion in the very fight promoted on this label. He fought a great deal in the US, but preferred living in France (he is said to have had an affair with Edith Piaf). Defeated by Jake LaMotta he trained for a rematch but died in a plane crash in the Azores.
Tony Zale, the fighter who Cerdan fought in Jersey City lived until 1997.
The label was printed by U.N.A.C. which stood for United Nations Appeal for Children.
