Item Description
1998 was 'The Year of the Ocean' and as part of its observance, Iceland Post issued 4 colorfully designed stamps showing sea creatures found in the waters around their island nation. Shown were the Lumpfish, the Cod, the Skate, and the Ocean Catfish. They all fell under the title of 'NYTJAFISKAR' -- 'Useful Fish'!The handcolored cachet, on a blue paper handmade envelope, shows a Puffin fisherman and his rather intimidating catch of a bemused Cod. Who will have who for dinner?
This souvenir sheet containing all four stamps is tied by a nice official First Day of Issue pictorial cancel from Reykjavík on April 16, 1998 that shows the cod and the skate. There is also an auxiliary cancel on the souvenir sheet, being the FDC tradition in Iceland.
The reverse bears the Puffin Cachets logo and shows that this cover is #1 of only 7 with this franking sent to Iceland for servicing.
