Item Description

Ohio became a state, the 17th admitted to the Union, in 1803. At that time there were Buffalo, Mountain Lions, Timber Wolves, and Porcupines sharing the plains and hills of the Buckeye State with early settlers.

Those species, and 5 others, can no longer be found within Ohio's borders. They are all depicted here, against the background of the crowd at the first Ohio Staehouse celebrating their new status as a state.

While this stamp celebrated the happy occasion of Ohio's Bicentennial, it was nevertheless disappointingly sad that these birds, mammals and insects no longer call Ohio their home.

This particular cover is the only one left that also bears the Ohio State Flag from the bicentennial sheet of fifty.
