POW Dept cover with INTERESTING CONTENT: 8c Defense (Scott #C26), tied by Tacoma WA Dec 3 1945 machine cancel to cover (BOTH stamp and cover cut in at R), addr La Crescenta CA, c/c PRISONER OF WAR DETACHMENT // FORT LEWIS WASHINGTON, while the cover has flaws the content is VF; a single sheet with printed heading PRISONER OF WAR DETACHMENT // FORT LEWIS WASHINGTON, datelined Sunday Dec 2 1945, from a soldier stationed at the camp, includes THURSDAY MORNING THEY FOUND T5 (technician fifth class) John B____ dead in the back seat of his friend's 1936 Dodge, he had hooked up a hose to the exhaust-pipe and ran it through the trunk . . . No one has figured out yet though how come the ignition key WAS TURNED OFF! Most unusual and telling item, Very Fine document, Fine cover.

Fort Lewis was (after 1943) a POW camp that included 4500 Germans in five camps. Many of the POWs came from Germany's famed armored Afrika Corps. Little has been written about this camp.
