5/16/63 MA-9 Recovery Ship USS Corry (DDR-817) Beck Cachet B342This cacheted cover commemorates the splashdown of MA-9 in the Pacific ocean. The Mercury (Atlas) 9 flight with astronaut, Gordon Cooper aboard the space capsule " Faith 7", was launched from Cape Canaveral at 9:04AM on 05/15/1963. Cooper made 22 orbits of the earth during which time he conducted scientific experiments. Cooper was forced to land the spacecraft manually due to automatic control failure. He splashed down in the Pacific Ocean at 7:24PM on 05/16/1963. He was recovered from the Pacific Ocean 36 minutes later by the USS Kearsarge (CVS-33). This Beck cover # B342 was hand cancelled on board the USS Corry (DDR-817) one of the Atlantic Recovery Force Ships.
