TWICE USED POST CARD: 1c Green, (Scott #331 with another stamp below it), first stamp tied to card by May 1911 NYC machine cnl, second stamp in June, addr Derby CT, music themed card with notes at top between "Post" and "Card", reverse re: shipment of religious music (which was handled by ADAMS EXPRESS per ms), very interesting, some toning, Fine-VF

Re-used cards are usually seen on postal cards. This exception is quite scarce.

The twice used cards worked like this: the company (the sender) sent a bill or notice to the customer (the recipient). When the recipient paid the bill they sent the card back under separate cover. If the customer wanted a receipt the company stamped "Paid" and then re-mailed the card with an additional stamp. The address was the same, so no changes were made there. This situation appears from the Bank Note period through the 1960s, though it is most often seen in the early twentieth century. Usually the second stamp was the same rate as the original, but there were periods where it was more expensive on the second mailing.
