Postal History: pre-war prexie cover to JAPAN; RETURNED, (Scott #806 & 807), tied by Crichton AL March 16 1941 duplex cnl to cover, cancel smudged and cover flts, addr JAPAN, handstamped in Kobe April 22, marked for Waterman Steamship Corp's SS City of Alma, this ship would later be sunk in WWII service, there was trouble locating the recipient so the cover was sent back to the steamship company (by label "c/o Waterman Steamship Corp") in Mobile and apparently then to the sender in Crichton, machine backstamp Mobile Aug 26 1940, five months and a few days after dispatch, things were less cordial in Japan for American ships after the oil embargo took hold in July, the cover shows a lot of wear, piece off, burn (?!) mark and staining, but is still significant, scarce item, Fine
