The 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly declared 2017 the International Year of Sustainable Tourism Development.
In recent decades, the tourism sector has proven its ability to contribute to economic development and the creation of new jobs. Representing 10% of world GDP, 7% of world trade and 1 in 11 jobs, tourism is an important socio-economic sector today. At the same time, taking into account that more than 1.2 billion people cross borders every year, tourism has become an essential basis for intercultural dialogue, social integration, peace and reconciliation, as well as sustainable development.
According to the Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Taleb Rifai, "when traveling, we not only gain knowledge about the culture and history of a certain place. We also embrace new thinking and new perspectives on various issues, problems and challenges of the outside world."
