Item Description
Hopefully this happy dog realizes he is transporting a load of dog biscuits in his rickshaw, rather than paying customers! At least he'll get a nice snack at the end of his run, if not cash!The Year of the Dog First Day of Issue Ceremony was held at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona, CA in February 1994 as part of the massive Asian-American Festival held every year. Despite the madhouse to buy stamps (this was just the 2nd US Lunar New Year stamp, and wildly popular) and get them serviced, we were able to get this cover and a handful of others hand-cancelled there!
This is the only cover serviced with both the Year of the Dog stamp, and the only US Lunar New Year stamp to precede it - the Year of the Rooster issue from the previous year - with two plate number singles!
Later, parts of the design had gold leaf added by hand to evoke the traditional Chinese palette of Emperor Red with inlaid Gold.
(the reverse is a bit 'untidy', unfortunately!)
