1976 Canada Kaulbach Island 25 Cents Alice in Wonderland Complete Set/4 MNH. Kaulbach Island – named after past owners of the island is peaceful, private and sheltered. The Island is part of the drumlin formations along the south coast of Nova Scotia. The proprietors of Kaulbach Island, a number of whom were fond of Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass, decided to feature Alice on the 1976 issue because of an association with philately. Lewis Carroll invented what may be described as the world's first stockbook, The Wonderland Postage-Stamp Case, which contained 12 pockets for stamps of different value. It also contained the two changeable "pictorial surprises," which are featured on the Kaulbach locals. The sheets, which were line perforated (11.5), were formatted 4 x 6 and were printed in two colours, blue pictures with black lettering.
10,000 sets were issued, with 1000 used on first day covers. Additionally, 497 were used to prepare combination FDCs using the United Kingdom's 1976 FDC of their Alice in Wonderland issue. Thanks to The Royal Philatelic Society of Canada (RPSC).
