1962 Spain FDC Second 1 Peseta Pope John XXIII Vatican Ecumenical Council. The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, also known as Vatican II, was the 21st ecumenical council of the Catholic Church, held from 1962 to 1965. Pope John XXIII announced the council on January 25, 1959, as a way to spiritually renew the church and encourage Christians separated from Rome to work together for Christian unity. The council was held in four sessions in Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City, each lasting between 8 and 12 weeks. The council produced a series of documents to guide the church's life in the 20th century and beyond. The council's four largest and most important documents are called "Constitutions", while shorter documents on more specific issues are called "Decrees" or "Declarations". Sacrosanctum Concilium: Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, promulgated on December 4, 1963
Lumen Gentium: Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, promulgated on November 21, 1964
The council is considered one of the most important events of the 20th century and is still considered the most significant event in the modern age of the Catholic Church.
