Trygve Halvdan Lie, (16 July 1896 – 30 December 1968) was a Norwegian politician, labour leader, government official and author. He served as Norwegian foreign minister during the critical years of the Norwegian government in exile in London from 1940 to 1945. From 1946 to 1952 he was the first Secretary-General of the United Nations. Lie earned a reputation as a pragmatic, determined politician.

From its founding by the Spanish in 1776, San Francisco has long had an international elan that is reflected today in its sizable immigrant population, its rich array of ethnic restaurants, its varied and polyglot culture, and its harbor that looks far into the Pacific. But what has brought about San Francisco’s leap into the global limelight is something that happened 70 years ago — when the city hosted the conference that founded the United Nations in the spring of 1945.

The organizers chose two notable buildings that sit next to each other — San Francisco’s stately War Memorial Opera House and Veteran’s Building — for the conclave. Washington even enlisted several theater designers to transform the interiors of both structures into glittering halls. In addition, the federal government provided printing stations, translators, transportation, taping equipment, private quarters, coatrooms and mini-libraries. Hundreds of military personnel were detailed to help out, including driving 215 sedans, 25 jeeps, 50 gray naval buses, and 49 private limousines carrying delegates and secretariat officials around town.
