* Up for auction is a beautiful airmail Qantas Parachute mail cover from Sydney, Australia to Mornington Island. Beautiful stamps and cancels. In excellent condition. Priced to sell. Postmarked December 24, 1946. Sent via flying boat and signed by the pilot and Missionary. First peace time mail drop after the war. At the outbreak of WW 2 shipping to Mornington Island was reduced and the missionary station ran short of supplies. as a goodwill Christmas gesture Qantas agreed to drop supplies and mail by parachute. The flying boat Hazelmore was used to make the parachute drop and this cover is signed by the pilot and J B McCArthy. This was the fifth parachute mail drop to the island. This mail was dropped by a charter flight to the Darwin area by Captain K G Caldwell.
