Item Description
US 1944 V-Mail letter (you can see the silver in it) and cover --- War & Navy Departments - V-Mail Service - Official Business --- black U. S. Postal Service May 6 1944 No. 3 circular dated postmark with wavy machine barsVertical creases at lower center --- diagonal creases at right (from front) and on back flap --- notes in pencil on back partially erased --- back cover flap opened and re-sealed
Letter is to Corporal W. H. Eddy, Detachment 3rd Airways Command Squadron, Stuttgart Field, Arkansas --- from Sergeant John B. Cash, 7th Army Airways Communications System, A.P.O. 953, c/o Postmaster, San Francisco, California
A.P.O. 953 indicates that at this time this writer is in Headquarters, 7th Air Force at Hickam Air Force Base located at Oahu, Territory of Hawaii --- partially indistinct Passed By Naval Censor circular censor's stamp with CK initials in middle at upper left
Letter is dated April 29, 1944, with location censored and begins, Dear Eddy --- the writer says, "I just got your letter and I was mighty glad to hear from you again." --- he continues, "I hadn't heard from you for some time and I was afraid they had sent you across but I'm certainly glad they didn't."
He recalls, "I hope your knee doesn't bother you to[o] much." --- he answers, "Yes, I hear from two or three of the boys we use[d] to go to school with. Rob[er]t Lundergen and Bolm... are still at Blytheville, Arkansas." --- he remembers, "Bolmes got married there and is living on the field now. I just got a letter from 'Pop' and he is in New Guinea. So is Salyer."
He asks, "Les Atherton... has been over in Africa for quite awhile and is still a P.F.C. I really feel sorry for him because they just can't get ratings." --- he elaborates, "I don't know exactly where he is but he said he had seen the Nile river a lot."
He adds, "he said he finally got a letter form chuck coyle and he is a gunner now. He got married also the last time he was home on furlough, the crazy guy." --- he anticipates, "well, it look[s] like i might run into some of the old gang sooner or later if they come over this way." --- signed, your pal, john; dark strip across bottom or sides is the plastic holder in the scan
