Up for auction is a beautiful airmail cover from the internment camp in Perote Mexico to the International Red Cross in Geneva Switzerland via Lisbon Portugal. Censored by Mexican and American authorities. Postmarked May 29, 1943. In excellent condition. Sender is Alexander Moeller. Probably a Germany sailor. Beginning in February, 1942, 250 Germany Sailors and 350 Italian sailors were captured as the crews of 8 ships who were in Mexican waters when Mexico joined the war on the side of the Allied powers. The sailors were imprisoned at the San Carlos fortress in Perote, Veracruz. During World War 2 other nationals from other enemy combatant counties were also imprisoned at Perote. The international red cross in Switzerland was responsible for handling the prisoners' mail. Most of the mail was censored by Mexican government officials and also by US authorites as the mail was routed through New York City en route to Switzerland. According to Mexicana magazine, less than 20 Perote internment covers have been reported and less than 40 covers survived the war.
