* Up for auction is a beautiful airmail Qantas Parachute mail cover from Sydney, Australia to Mornington Island. Beautiful stamps and cancels. In excellent condition. Priced to sell. Postmarked December 22, 1941. Sent via flying boat and signed by the pilot and Missionary. Second mail drop of the war. At the outbreak of WW 2 shipping to Mornington Island was reduced and the missionary station ran short of supplies. as a goodwill Christmas gesture Qantas agreed to drop supplies and mail by parachute. The flying boat Corinna from the Singapore flight was used to make the parachute drop and this cover is signed by the pilot and Reverend Braunholz, the mission chief. This was the second parachute mail drop to the island. The regular mail service from Australia to singapore was still in effect but subject to attach by Japan.
