Item Description

This Lot is a unique two sided cover - the first side is addressed from Amsterdam, Netherlands to Pretoria, South Africa and the second side returned from Pretoria to Amsterdam and ultimately to Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia. Both sides bear inscriptions and cachets commemorating the South African religious holiday named "Dingaansdag" or the Battle of Blood River on December 16, 1938, before which about 400 Voortrekkers made a promise to God that if he rescued them out of the hands of approximately 20,000 Zulu warriors, they would honor that day as a sabbath day.

The first side, from Amsterdam to Pretoria is franked with Scott #'s 142, 192, 209-11, C10 and C11 all tied to cover by "AMSTERDAM CENTR STAtION / -5.XII / 1938" circular date stamps. Stamps have deep rich coloring, four margins with varied but nice centering, and excellent perforations all around. The first side of cover is addressed to "Postkantoor, Voortrekkermonument, PRETORIA" and bears "VOORTREKKERMONUMENT / 12XII 38" receiving stamp.

The second side, or reverse side, from Pretoria to Amsterdam bears Scott #'s B5-8 all tied to cover by "VOORTREKKERMONUMENT / 15XII38 / PRETORIA" circular date stamps. Stamps have deep rich coloring, four margins with varied but nice centering, and excellent perforations all around. This side bears "AMSTERDAM CENTRAL STATION / 31.XII / 1938" receiving stamp. Cover is addressed to "MEDAN N.O.I" after leaving Amsterdam.

Please see pictures of front and reverse side of this cover. Cover measures approximately 180 mm x 136 mm and shows light wear on surfaces from postal handling with nice corners and straight edges. Scott 2023 Catalogue values the stamps on both sides at approximately $35.00 US.
