Item Description

The Louvre Museum in Paris is renowned the world over as home to some of the greatest works of art created. The French government, in 1937, issued a pair of semi-postal stamps to raise money for the museum. The stamps feature the "Winged Victory of Samothrace," or Nike of Samothrace, a votive monument originally discovered on the island of Samothrace in the northeastern Aegean Sea. The monument is considered a masterpiece of Greek sculpture dating from the beginning of the 2nd century B.C. This pair of stamps is adhered to a commemorative Louvre souvenir sheet (gummed, hinged) and cancelled with a museum cancellation Oct. 21, 1937 in Paris. This is one of those classic French philatelic and cultural rarities which do not reach the market often.
