Item Description
Scarce 1936 Spain Civil War 5 Centimos Sovereign Council of Asturias and León Charity Local Post With Black Control Number On Back Unused No Gum. The Stamp Is From Asturias And Léon, Spain, 1936. The Sovereign Council of Asturias and León Local Lasted 59 Days From August 24-October 21, 1937. The July 1936 Coup D'état Led By General Francisco Franco Was Partially Successful, Failing To Control A Large Part Of Spanish Territory. One Of The Areas That Remained Under The Control Of The Republican Government Was Most Of The Cantabrian Coast, Including The Eastern Part Of Asturias And The North Of The Province Of León. To Combat The Rebels And At The Same Time Manage The Territory, Several Government Bodies Were Established, Among Them The War Committee Of Gijón And The Popular Committee Of Sama De Langreo, Later Unified Under The Name Of The Interprovincial Council Of Asturias And León. Throughout The Summer Of 1937, The Basque Country And Much Of Cantabria Fell Into Rebellious Hands; In What Remained Of The Northern Front, Not Having Land Contact With The Rest Of The Area Loyal To The Republic, Local Governments Had To Assume Powers From The Central State, Such As Defense Or Currency. In August 1937, The Central Council Approved Becoming A Sovereign Council, Assuming All The Powers Of The Republican Government, And Declaring De Facto Independence, Including Communication About It To The League Of Nations. However, It Wouldn't Last Long. Santander Fell That Same Week And In Less Than Two Months All The Territory Controlled By The Council (Which From The Beginning Was Reduced To Just Over Half Of Asturias) Fell Into Francoist Hands.
