Item Description

This Lot is a rare piece of Postal History - a postcard documenting the 1924 Mount Everest Expedition. This postcard originated in the Tibetan Rongbuk Valley Base Camp, was carried by postal runner to India and mailed from Calcutta to Rhyl, Wales. Postcard is franked with India Scott #101 (a 1 1/2 As King George V) tied to card by "CALCUTTA / 16 OCT 1924 / FOR" circular date cancel and "BRITISH EMPIRE EXHIBITION" illustrated killer. Stamp has nice coloring, 2 good margins plus 2 margins close to design, centered to the bottom right, and worn perforations except where folded under at top right. Address side of card also carries a blue and white "MOUNT EVEREST EXPEDITION" label tied to card by pink "MT. EVEREST EXPEDITION / RONGBUK GLACIER BASE CAMP / 1924" circular hand stamp. Label has deep rich coloring, 4 margins with centering toward the top right, and worn perforations except where bottom right corner has been removed. Please see pictures.

Reverse side of postcard reflects a black-and-white photograph of the Rongbuk Valley Base Camp in Tibet as well as a hand written note reading "Best Wishes - / J.B.L. Noel, Captain. / Mt. Everest Expedition". Please see picture. Postcard measures approximately 140 mm x 91 mm and has straight edges and lightly rounded corners from postal usage. While clean front and back, this postcard has light-to-moderate foxing from age and weather conditions scattered/prevalent over both surfaces - as is common on other examples of this postcard. Reading of Expedition history on internet Wikipedia is highly recommended. Please see pictures for condition and quality.
