1900 Spain Propaganda Poster Stamp Unió Catalanista (Catalanist Union) MNH. The Unió Catalanista (in English: Catalanist Union) was a Catalanist political group, initially conservative, formed in Barcelona in 1891, from the union of various Catalanist trade unions and associations that came into contact as a result of the resistance against Article 15 of the Civil Code, which they considered to be an attack on Catalan civil law. Catalan artists of the period created stamps featuring Saint George, the patron saint of Catalonia (as well as England, Greece, Egypt, and other nations). The designs were updated each year, with the colors changing monthly. These stamps were used to signify payment of a monthly contribution and were often attached to a card or document for this purpose. Catalans were encouraged to include these stamps on their letters and postcards, alongside official Spanish stamps, as a way to express pride in their country. However, Spanish authorities viewed the stamps as "seditious."
