1899-1900 – Scarce reproduction of a pair of rare invitations to an Arizona hanging -
Sheriff F. J. Wattron sent out humorously invitations to the hanging of “George Smiley, Murderer” that some reformers found demeaning. After complaining to the Governor and President, Wattron was ordered to send out revised somber invitations that Wattron still managed to make obsequiously humorous. Only 1 of the original and two of the reproductions are known to exist. Date of reprinting unknown; may have been contemporary, possibly by the sheriff himself.
