Item Description
Approximately 8" x 4.5".Scarce Southern Telegraph Company message. From Colonel Josia Gorgas, Chief of the Confederate Ordnance Bureau, to Major J. W. Waller, no month or year. Message reads "Make arrangements with the parties referred to in your letter of the sixth if you have full confidence in them. Evasion of military duty must be guarded against." Gorgas, a Pennsylvanian, was one of the very few northern-born West Pointers to join the Confederacy. His efforts at creating an armament industry from scratch to keep the army supplied with rifles, cannons, shot, shell, and gunpowder are legendary.
Missing two pieces of the telegram so priced accordingly.
