1862 – "The Soldier to his Mother" [Alternate title: "Just Before the Battle Mother"]. Words attributed to Thomas McKellar but actually written by Lawson Wood. Music by William P. Lucker. Cleveland: S. Brainard & Company. 1862. Complete. Approximately 10 x 13”

Although this song is often attributed to Root & Cady or others, the original lyrics of this famous Civil War ballad were written by a young soldier, Lawson Wood, while he waited to die in a Union hospital after being mortally wounded at the initial Battle of Vicksburg. Root and Cady had planned to publish the soldier’s far more heartrending lyrics as "On the Field of Battle, Mothe"r but a mistake was made. Before it could be corrected Brainard published this version.
