Item Description
Grade: VF (Very Fine)Stampless Folded Letter addressed to Samuel Slater and Sons in Webster, Mass. This cover features a Baltimore, Md circular date stamp in blue and a '10' in an oval. The enclosed letter is on the letterhead of Turnbull, Dall, and Slade, Dry goods merchants in Baltimore at the time. The subject of the letter is an order for some black cloth from the Slater Mills. Nice piece of early business history since Samuel Slater was known as the "Father of the American Industrial Revolution". Slater designed the first textile mill in the United States and built a factory system that used the entire family as workers.
