_popular "hollow cross" design ~ from late 1870s -1990s ***** a well-known pittsburgh, penn.  "hollow cross" type on piece with a cds...It is much scarcer with a validating pittsburgh circular date stamp[cds]..._

_item(s) from a specialized collection of 1870s-1890s fancy and killer cancels.  these represent a select group of us banknote issues, each with typical post office strikes of unusual, colored or fancy cancel designs. _

_ please note that some minor paper flaws are present, but generally do not adversely affect the quality of these old-time post office cancellation strikes._

_some of these are similar to a variety of popular hand-carved & specialty designs adopted for contemporary use by local postmaster/clerks...Typically for only brief periods of time before  frequently adopting  revised/modified or totally new designs._

_most of the surviving types were subsequently researched and traced/illustrated by james cole for inclusion in his 1995 reference: "cancellations and killers of the banknote era, 1870-1894._
