Item Description

1837 us stampless folded letter with list enclosure red bangor dec 6 me. (december - maine) circular dated postmark --- addressed to mr. Thomas furber, boston, massachusetts --- george wheelwright, 5th december 1837 in script at upper right --- seal is present with hole torn in corresponding back flap from opening

Letter has copy at top and begins, mr. George wheelwright, dear sir --- the writer instructs, "you will please use every possible effort to effect sales of the stock of goods - mortgaged by thos [thomas] furber to webster chase & co and others - for cash." --- he continues, "and as often as you may have recd to the amt of two hundred dollars, you will please [write] a check on bonston, and remit the same to me" --- dated at bottom boston december 4, 1837, and signed, yours respectfully, h. S. Chase, attorney at mortgages

Second note on letter states, "as i shall probably be absent from the city most of the time, you will make your checks payable and forward your money to webster chase & co" --- signed, yours h. S. Chase

The original letter is dated bangor, december 5, 1837, and begins, mr. Furber, dear sir --- the writer begins, "the above is a copy of mr. Chase's instructions to us in relation to your stock" --- he continues, "mr chase has been very particular in his inqueries about the disposition of the money that has been taken since you left"

He explains, "he leaves in the morning, but will stop a day or two on his way - he said he should call you you immediately on his reaching boston --- signed, respectfully, yours, george wheelwright --- the enclosed list is titled mortgages and includes a list of eight items with amounts listed topped by "web c & co - 2250" --- note at bottom is "stock on hand 8th nov $6970; dark strip across bottom or sides is the plastic holder in the scan
