On starting to sekk

Hi
I’m wondering about opening a store. What was your biggest challenge when you started selling
Thanks for any comments or advice

  • First go over one key to the right...( sorry, sorry , could not residd).
  • 1. Organization (being able to find items I sold for example)
    2. Planning (what do I really want to do with this store and why)
    3. Proper imaging and description best practices (proper equipment)
    4. Effective pricing strategy including whether to focus on auction items or store items. (I chose store items only)
    5. Shipping including pricing, proper packaging, and where I am willing to ship to (US and Canada for now)
6, Deciding on whether to set the store up as a "real" business or not (I set it up as a sole proprietorship)
    7. Inventory sourcing (I have found that careful bidding on quality auction lots have performed well for me)
    8. Who to trust for good advice (I have developed some really good relationships with experienced high-quality dealers)
    9. Learning from my mistakes and not having the hubris to not be willing to correct them.
    10. Many more

An excellent start would be to review the IPDA Selling and Listing Guidelines which can be found here. It is not a comprehensive tome but following these guidelines will give you a good, solid foundation from which to build.

Hi Joe....I think Greg pretty much nailed it. I would reiterate Item #1.....there is nothing more frustrating, and embarrassing, than to sell a stamp and unable to locate it in your inventory. While I have only ended up with two totally unlocated stamps, the time spent looking for a misfiled stamp is no fun.

Also, take your time listing. If you list many stamps at one setting, as I do, it's too easy to make a simple mistake...ie especially numbering. When you are done listings read over them (now in your store) for correctness and your clarity of your descriptions.
  • HI Joe, take your time and if you run into a snag, Don't be afraid to ask any questions, we will help you.
  • Create your business model first. Even if you are only going to sell off duplicates as a collector, you need a business model, or else you'll find out that it is costing you more to sell than what you earn.

What is a business model? Follow the ten points Greg laid out.
