No bid auctions on Ebay.

Most every day, I go to Ebay and search "CanadaMint Stamps". I then sort by "Ending Soonest". I have picked up some nice, and nicely priced, stamps doing this. The vast majority I look at ending within 12 hours have zero bids. Sure, some are outrageously priced, but many are nice looking stamp that should have attracted at least one bid. Has it always been like this on Ebay? Or is there a supply/demand issue taking place now?

The constant exception to this is NYStamps. They ALWAYS have bids, which leads me to believe shill bidding might be present.

  • Yes on NY Stamps and the market is very slow right now. Many people are hurting or are afraid that they will be hurting.
  • When am buying on E-Bay, I always use a sniper program that will put in a bid in the last 10 seconds of biding because a lot of sellers use the program to automatically up the bid in an attempt of get you to bid higher.
  • Are you saying NY Stamps has shill bidders who jack up their prices?
  • Nah... they would NEVER do THAT...
  • ok wasn't going to respond but ... when NY stamps was mentioned (have bought and as good or better than implied) i then looked at 2 diff us albums had for sale this Sat and had 21 different bidders. Then looked at about 8 stamps ign) selling btwn 20 & 45 minutes with 29 different bidders and none from the album bidders. That's 50 diff bidders on 10 stamps -here's a thought: maybe over yrs has a trusted following and doesn't need shills - did you ck ck stamps or td stamps or boots but putting that name may not bring up. Not saying you are wrong just i believe trusted seller like some of you i know are/should be trusted
  • I will add my two cents worth. I am not an expert philatelist by any means and I have absolutely no proof but just gut feelings. The stamps that I have received from New York stamps have always been acceptable and as per their descriptions. They do have a one cent opening bid on their auctions which is very appealing and a lot of their material is sold at very competitive prices. However I do notice that a number of items that I bid on and am then outbid on have almost identical twins showing up in the next auction or two. Also there are enough minor and or major errors in stamp ID that lead me to not want to bid on anything of higher value. This problem ensures that I won't ever bid on, as an example, Italian stamps that are used where the value is higher for used than mint. It seems many of the stamps might fall into the category of fake cancellations?!
  • One other observation is that it is very difficult to believe any stamp dealer would list a stamp valued in the multi-thousand dollar range on a one cent minimum auction not believing that any certification or verification would be needed. The applies to any vendor both on hip stamp or eBay or other auction houses. Difficult to trust the veracity of any high ticket items from those suppliers.
  • While I don't doubt that shill bidding exists, I also don't doubt that many of the complaints about such are baseless claims from people just ticked that they were not able to snag that $100 stamp at the 1c opening bid.
  • It occurs to me that there is little practical difference between an auction with a shill bidder and an auction with a hidden reserve. I don't like either, just sayin'.
  • I've won several stamps from NYStamps on Ebay. Some decent buys, and decent stamps. I'm a bit lear though and carefully look at pics. I've sent a few back of late, which has never been a problem.
  • Will someone explain what shill biding is?
  • Glenn. Shill bidding is when a third party or person bids the price up with no intention of buying the item. The bidder works with the seller. So if the bidder ends up buying it it just moves back to the original seller who lists it again. The idea is to drive the price up artificially.
  • Yea, but i would also assume the seller will owe a sales fee to HIP ofthus almost 10% and pay pal?? so the shill needs to back out at some point but not always right time thus getting stuck with stamp(s)
  • PayPal could be circumvented, but there would still be fees to the auction venue. The piper don't play for free.
