DC, I would suggest not to ice it, but can you pull the full page from the stock book and put it in the freezer? It just need to be in for about 20 minutes. No change of fugitive color in that case. I don't know about this issue, I've never handled it before.
So, I think it is a tap dye 4 actually, which is strange because the book describes that particular dye, but has 0 stamps listed with it made. I believe it is because of the incomplete frame line in the upper right corner of the stamp.
Further, I think it is double impressioned the more I looked at it. The right side of the country shows a much heavier line print, and the details on the kangaroo are much more clear and dark than the rest.
Scott and George. Good news, I managed to remove it from the page without destroying it. I'm still amazed, only left a little damage to the book. I also have a message in to my other aussie seller to see if he knows.
Back showed no visible watermark, so I think I'm going to call it and Australia 2 q. Tap dye 4 with no watermark used. Valued....1.75 like the other used versions.
No to your question George. I do not know what media mail is.
DC, Don't rely on shadows for watermarks. Put it face down in lighter fluid (Ronsonol) against a black surface (back of a dealer card, or preferably in a black watermark tray). You'll be able to find it then.
Why do you think it's a double impression? I don't see any sign of this. Congrats on getting it free.
I tested it again just now and it seems to be normal. So, no excitement there but close! Glad I got it free and hope I can identify it as a type 4 (not that it matters) but then I'll have a type 1, 3, and 4.
And With the color, that matters on this stamp type. Comes in carmine which two of mine are, but this i think is a 2g with a wonky tap dye set (see break in right inside line).
DC That's the left inside line, if it matters, not the right... In your image, there is a break at right. Sorry I'm not a specialist in this stamp and I'm feeling a little lazy to look it up today. But if this type is differentiated by specific location of that break, yours is on the opposite side.
Yes, precisely. Also above that as well at the top right inner frame line. Thats what lead me to believe it was a type 4, but there is no AUS 2, type 4.
I then ordered the used AUS 2, type 1 shown here, and a AUS 2h unused also shown here, which is a type 3. I don't have a type 2, but the book says 2 has no breaks with repaired dye.
Also, I think the color difference with it means its a rose color and not a carmine like the others, or its a double impression. Im going to have to get this one looked at I think.
Thank you to infinity for the advice to get it out of the book. Made a small hole in the book, not a big problem.
DC, It's not a double impression. Double impression doesn't change color. (Mark it appear darker). A double impression is when some part of the stamp comes into contact with the same die twice, very rapidly, and usually only a small offset. You would see the same image with less detail in a particular area of the stamp, and that hasn't occurred here at all.
I'll see if I can look a bit further into this issue and get something definitive.
That would be much appreciated. I think I am going to send this one in for cert anyways. Its not the greatest stamp (and in my opinion is an Australia 2 ROSE RED made with dye 4, which is the only unusual part as there is no dye 4 AUSTRALIA 2). Still, used, etc id be surprised still if it came back as anything worth a hoot, but there are only going to be a handful that I send in to get certs when this is over I fear!
The only reason I thought it was a dye 4 was the obvious break in the upper right hand corner, and opposite side break from the type 3 new I posted.
Cert should not be used for "ID". Certs should be like your algebra grade... you should NOT be surprised by how it comes back. If you are, then it means you haven't done the work you should/could do and save yourself the time and cost. Even "cheap certs" aren't cheap, and if you cert a stamp that's worth less than the cert, you'll never recoup the cost. So if you're just trying to figure out what it is (and you've mentioned before there is no "dye 4" on Australia 2... well then what does that tell you about what you have?).
I haven't had a chance to research this stamp any further yet, as I'm not at home, and on a construction site for a few days. But I'll look into it.
So its been a while since I posted, and I'm slowly trying to get back to Czechoslovakia IN ALL 3 BOOKS, so I can do them at the same time moving forward.
I wanted to share some excellent pictures of how its progressing, and also a major victory in my process which was bad ass.
I went to a place, and found some pretty awesome stuff under some junk there. Bought a guys old entire collection for 13 bucks, and some random bags of nonsense stamps. One bag said "to identify" , so for 3.50, I had to buy it. Check this out
DC, so much easier to see if you put them on a black background, group them together and then zoom in on them. This is too busy, I literally get dizzy looking at it.
These are Saudi Arabia. The 5g Violet should be #169 and measure 29 x 20 1/4mm. Looks to be the 1934 set white paper. The 1946-1949 printings were on grey paper. The rose colored stamps are Postal Tax and upside down. The Tughra is always at the top. There are multiple varieties of this - size, perf, paper, redrawn, litho, photo.
Nice find DC!
Regarding your Australia. A Die IV has an inside frameline break opposite the face of the kangaroo (like Die III). And a break in the top outside frameline above the "ST" in Australia. The upper right inside frameline has an incomplete corner.
I need to get better at pictire placement and framing for sure! Sorry Scott.
You are correct Jeri! I was stoked I found them in a bag for $3.50 with a bunch of other used throwbacks. It somewhat made me feel like all of the study so far has paid off!
The Australian that I had very closely represents dye 4, but there is no dye 4 for the carmine kangaroo (scotts only has types 1 -3 listed with multiple color variations throughout). Thats where the confusion I had set in (and also why I specifically ordered a type 1 and type 3 from hipstamp for comparison).
Been a while, just wanted to say thanks again, and let you know I'm now on Belgium with all three books. Wanted to show you guys some fun. Took me a while, and still have a bit to do, but I promised weird crap so here!

The dealer responded and sent this.

Just to be clear, this is where I see the break in your inner frame line. It's opposite side of the image you posted from the dealer.

David you do not need to advertise that site on every single thread.
