  Thanks François and Tony. # 79 shows the letters C / D. Does this mean the letters would change from one issue to the other? I "hate" old stamps!

  The letters on the corners are positions on the sheet. They were a safeguard against forgery and re-use. Many GB Victoria issues have this feature. Each position has a different corner letter combination starting with AA to TL (I think).

  Thanks a million! Either I missed it, but I've been reading the foot notes in Scott all over the place, and there's many. And I didn't see this anywhere, but I only have the "general" book. So it will be #79!
