Close an auction item that no longer is in inventory but has a current bid

Could someone advise how to close or delete an auction item that no longer exists and has an open bid. Also how to notify bidder before it closes? Thanks.

    You cannot close or delete an auction item that has a bid. Use the Contact Us link to discuss it with management to get things righted.

    In fact I did contact the help folks and was told that as long as there were more than 24 hours left on the auction, either the cancel and or delete buttons should work. These already having been tried before I contacted them, produced a "system not working as designed " response. They are investigating why it did not work since there were 8 + days remaining on the auction.
