Leaning envelopes with stamps

Is there a way to clean badly soiled envelops from the 1900-1920 period without removing the stamps (or having them removed by the cleaning process). Thanks--I have much to learn and/or relearn.

Depends on the cover and what soiling has occurred. Do you have a particular cover you're trying to clean that you can post an image of?
